Nursing workforce still stressed and burned out
The US nursing workforce has shown signs of recovery since the Covid-19 crisis, but stress and burnout continue to take a toll, according to the 2024 National Nursing Workforce Study released by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. It found 9% of registered nurses and 41.3% of licensed practical/vocational nurses plan to leave the workforce or retire within the next five years. Stress and burnout were the reasons cited by 41.5% of those planning to leave. Other top reasons included workload, understaffing and inadequate salary.
